Why You Keep Getting Injured (And Why Rest Alone Won't Fix It)

If you've rolled the same ankle three times, torn the same hamstring twice, or watched your back "go" every few months like clockwork, You have an unresolved problem.

Most recurring injuries aren't random. They're the predictable result of tissue being asked to do more than it's currently capable of, repeatedly, without the capacity to adapt in between. Understanding why that happens is the first step to breaking the cycle.

The Three Usual Suspects

1. Training errors and sudden load spikes: The single biggest predictor of injury in sport isn't how much you train, it's how quickly you ramp it up. Jumping from 20km a week to 35km, adding three extra gym sessions after a holiday, or returning to full training too soon after time off all spike tissue load faster than the body can strengthen to meet it. Tendons, muscles, and bone all adapt to load.

2. Chronic loading without adequate recovery: This is the quieter, more insidious version. It's not one big spike, it's small, repeated stress that never gets a chance to fully resolve. Tendinopathies, stress reactions, and "niggles that never quite go away" usually live here. The tissue is under-recovering relative to what's being asked of it, session after session, week after week. Sleep, nutrition, and total life stress all factor into recovery capacity.

3. Compensations from an old injury that was never properly rehabilitated: This is the one we see most often in clinic. An injury happens, pain settles in a few weeks, the person returns to sport or activity, but strength, control, and movement pattern were never fully restored. The body compensates. Load shifts to another structure that wasn't designed to carry it. Eighteen months later, that structure fails too. The new injury looks unrelated.

Why "Just Rest It" Doesn't Work

Rest reduces symptoms. It doesn't rebuild capacity. If you stop training, let pain settle, and go straight back to your previous level, you return with the same strength deficits and movement faults that caused the problem in the first place, but now layered on top of detraining. This is exactly why injuries recur: the underlying cause was never addressed, only the symptom.

The Fix Is Prehab, Not Just Rehab

Prehabilitation, targeted, proactive strengthening and movement work done before you're injured, or before you return to full load after an injury is one of the most effective tool for breaking a recurring injury cycle. Good prehab does three things:

  • Builds tissue capacity ahead of demand: Progressive loading of tendons, muscles, and joints so they can absorb the forces your sport or lifestyle actually places on them.

  • Corrects movement patterns and asymmetries: Many recurring injuries trace back to how load is distributed through the body under fatigue — not just raw strength.

  • Restores confidence and control: particularly after a previous injury, so movement isn't being subconsciously guarded or compensated around.

Done properly, prehab isn't generic. It has to be specific to your sport, your load, your history, and your deficits.

How Urban Physiotherapy Can Help

At Urban Physiotherapy, we don't just treat the injury in front of us, we investigate why it happened, and why it's likely to happen again if nothing changes. That means:

  • A thorough movement and load assessment to identify the actual deficits driving your injury pattern, not just the site of pain.

  • Individually programmed strength and prehab plans, built around your sport, your training load, and your history.

  • Return-to-sport pathways that are criteria-based, not calendar-based, so you go back when your body is actually ready, not just when the pain has settled.

  • Ongoing monitoring of training load and capacity so small issues get addressed before they become recurring ones.

Our team works specifically with athletes and active people who are sick of the same injury coming back. Whether it's a recurring hamstring strain, an ankle that never quite trusts itself, or a back that flares every few months, the goal isn't to get you out of pain and hope for the best. It's to build a body that can actually handle what you're asking of it.
