Dry Needling Explained: How it Can Help You!

Muscle tightness and stubborn trigger points don't always respond to stretching or rest. When a knot in your shoulder or a tight calf keeps limiting how you move, dry needling is one of the most effective tools we use at Urban Physiotherapy North Sydney to break the cycle.
What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a targeted physiotherapy technique that uses fine, sterile needles to release tight muscles and deactivate painful trigger points. Dry needling is grounded in current musculoskeletal and neurophysiological research where the needle is inserted directly into taut muscle bands to trigger a local twitch response, prompting the muscle to release.
Inserted into specific areas of muscle, the needles work to:
Decrease tension and stiffness
Improve blood flow and support healing
Reduce pain and inflammation
Restore healthy muscle activation
How Does It Actually Work?
When a muscle is overloaded, injured, or under chronic strain, small areas within it can develop into "trigger points", tight, hyperirritable bands of tissue that refer pain elsewhere in the body. A classic example we see in clinic are tight upper trapezius, causing tension headaches. Needling these points interrupts the dysfunctional pattern, encourages the muscle fibres to relax, and increases local blood flow to accelerate the body's own repair process.
The result is often an immediate reduction in stiffness, followed by improved range of motion and reduced pain over the following days as the tissue settles.
Conditions Dry Needling Can Help With
Dry needling is commonly used across musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy, including for:
Neck and shoulder pain
Headaches and jaw tension
Back pain and postural tightness
Tendon and overuse injuries (Achilles, patellar, and similar)
Sports injuries and muscle strains
Sciatica and nerve-related pain
Post-surgery or post-injury stiffness
Not every presentation is suited to needling, which is why it's applied selectively, as one part of an assessment-led treatment plan, not a default response to pain.
Safety Comes First
Dry needling should only ever be performed by a physiotherapist with accredited training in the technique. At Urban Physiotherapy, that's a non-negotiable, every practitioner using dry needling has completed accredited training, and we follow strict infection control procedures with single-use sterile needles for every treatment.
If you have specific health conditions, are taking certain medications, or are pregnant, your physiotherapist will talk through whether dry needling is appropriate and offer effective alternatives if it's not.
How Urban Physiotherapy Can Help
At Urban Physiotherapy North Sydney, dry needling is one part of a broader, evidence-based approach to getting you moving and feeling better, not a stand-alone fix. Our physiotherapists assess the full picture: how you move, where the tightness is coming from, and what's actually driving your symptoms, before building a treatment plan around your goals.
For conditions that don't fully resolve with manual therapy and needling alone, we also offer shockwave therapy, a non-invasive treatment that stimulates the body's natural healing response in chronic or slow-to-heal tissue.
Whether you're dealing with a nagging injury, chronic pain, or simply want to move better, our team will tailor a plan that's right for you, combining hands-on treatment, dry needling, shockwave therapy, and rehabilitation to get you back to doing what you love. book an assessment with our team to at (02) 8526 4000 or info@urbanphysiotherapy.com.au
