Common Neck Pain Injuries

Acute Wry Neck

Commonly present as sharp acute pain and stiffness to one or both directions. This is generally due to a facet irritation/ impingement causing the neck muscles to spasm as a protective mechanism.

This can occur due to sleeping on a different pillow, working at a computer screen or turning your head quickly. Symptoms can radiate into the shoulders, elbows and hands or at times present with a headache.

Cervicogenic Neck Pain and Headaches

Can present with a stiff neck, tight neck muscles and a dull ache causing a headache. These symptoms can be short term or can last for several weeks or months without treatment.

Tension in the neck muscles commonly refers to the closest sources which includes the head, shoulders, and shoulder blade. The pain can be on one or both sides of the neck and can range from mild to severe symptoms.

Severe cervicogenic headaches can cause nausea, vomiting or dizziness. Long periods of computer work particularly on laptops can contribute greatly as well as unsupportive pillows.

Postural Pain

A poor ergonomic setup of your desk, working on a laptop or an unsupportive pillow at night can contribute to a sore neck during the day.

Generally poor posture is a combination of a few factor including muscle weakness/ imbalance between muscle groups, muscle tightness, joint stiffness or a un-ergonomic setup. A trained physiotherapist can help you determine the cause of your neck pain.
